Poesie · Libro XXXIII · Canti del commiato
Mentre il tempo si avvicina
As the Time Draws Nigh
As the time draws nigh glooming a cloud,
A dread beyond of I know not what darkens me.
Mentre il tempo si avvicina, oscurandosi come una nuvola,
un timore al di là di non so che cosa mi oscura.
I shall go forth,
I shall traverse the States awhile, but I cannot tell whither or how long,
Perhaps soon some day or night while I am singing my voice will suddenly cease.
Partirò,
percorrerò gli Stati per un poco, ma non so dire dove né per quanto,
forse presto un giorno o una notte mentre canto la mia voce cesserà all’improvviso.
O book, O chants! must all then amount to but this?
Must we barely arrive at this beginning of us?—and yet it is enough, O soul;
O soul, we have positively appear’d—that is enough.
O libro, o canti! deve tutto ammontare soltanto a questo?
Dobbiamo appena arrivare a questo nostro inizio? eppure basta, o anima;
o anima, siamo davvero apparsi, questo basta.
