Poesie · Libro XXII · In memoria del presidente Lincoln
O Capitano! mio Capitano!
O Captain! My Captain!
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Capitano! mio Capitano! il nostro viaggio pauroso è compiuto,
la nave ha superato ogni tempesta, il premio che cercavamo è vinto,
il porto è vicino, sento le campane, la gente tutta esulta,
mentre gli occhi seguono la chiglia salda, il vascello cupo e audace;
ma o cuore! cuore! cuore!
O le gocce rosse che sanguinano,
dove sul ponte giace il mio Capitano,
caduto freddo e morto.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.
O Capitano! mio Capitano! alzati e senti le campane;
alzati, per te è spiegata la bandiera, per te squilla la tromba,
per te mazzi di fiori e ghirlande con nastri, per te le rive si affollano,
te chiamano, la massa ondeggiante, volgendo i volti ansiosi;
qui Capitano! caro padre!
Questo braccio sotto la tua testa!
È un sogno che sul ponte
tu sia caduto freddo e morto.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
Il mio Capitano non risponde, le sue labbra sono pallide e immobili,
il mio padre non sente il mio braccio, non ha polso né volontà,
la nave è all’ancora sana e salva, il suo viaggio chiuso e compiuto,
dal viaggio pauroso la nave vittoriosa entra con l’obiettivo raggiunto;
esultate, o rive, e suonate, o campane!
Ma io con passo dolente
cammino sul ponte dove giace il mio Capitano,
caduto freddo e morto.
